Basal rosette of usually deeply pinnatisect, simple-hairy leaves with long thin terminal lobe or can be ±entire to dentate. They tend to less lobed and hairless in wetter habitats
Leafless ±branching stem, widening below the capitulum ±merging into the capitulum ±without a shoulder. Has dark, scale-like bracts on the stem. Outer ligules ±reddish below. Pappus is branched and is usually a dirty brown. The achene looks like it is built up of bricks like a factory chimney (muricate) and is not beaked.
